Question
I want to paint the family room. woodwork is white and will stay white. coming down the stairs into this room is a green wall, medium green(carryover from hall upstairs and only place green could be broken. We are thinking of a coral downstairs or a deep red with brown in it but don't want the green/red to look like Christmas. also since the room is large, I was thinking of another color as an accent wall, but with one short wall already green, is this viable and what would it be? 2 large walls are broken up with windows and Patio door. Really only 1 solid wall in the room which has bookcases etc on it. Couches are leather in a mustard Yellow color. Beige carpeting with a large area rug, mostly green some colored flowers in the border. Just can't figure out how to pull this together. Any ideas

Answer
Hi Elisabeth,

The red and green would look like a Christmas color story if the green's and red's are similar to those colors.  If you have a sage green and combine is with  a brick red, it would be fine.  If you have green in the rug, that pulls this color from your accent wall so you could pull another color from the rug and use it on your walls.  Is there a color in there that blends with your mustard color sofa.

You can always use a deeper or lighter version of your green, a deeper version the mustard color on your sofa and then do an accent wall in the red or red-orange color.  If you can send me the names and manufacturers of the green and a similar color to your sofa, I can be more specific to help you narrow the focus.

I hope this helps you.  Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Experience

I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.
