Painting & Wallpapering - curtains and comforters

Expert: Rebecca Bushner - 8/27/2009

Question
QUESTION: Could you recommend a few places that I could search for curtains and comforters. I've been to J.C.Penny and Bed Bath and Beyond and nothing seems to strike me.
Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Christina
It all depends on where you live and your budget. Here are some other mid-priced stores.
1. IKEA (If you are lucky enough to live near one, excellent window coverings & duvets) Also online. IKEA.com
2. Crate and Barrel (Excellent quality. I have a Marimekko duvet cover from them that is 10 years old and still looks great) http://www.crateandbarrel.com/
3. CB2 http://www.cb2.com/
4. The Company Store (Excellent quality and great color selections) http://www.thecompanystore.com/
Target sometime has nice-looking stuff too...I have bought decent sheets from them and they have some better-quality and better-designed products now.
I hope this helps!
Cheers,
rebecca

QUESTION: Would you be so kind as to tell me what some calming paint colors from Benjamin Moore are for the bedroom. I'm looking for something neutral that would go with alot of colors. My furniture in my bedroom is a dark oak. Thank You

Answer
Hi Christina
First, you practically answered the question yourself! :) "Something neutral that go with a lot of colors". That means the Big Four: White, Cream, Beige, Taupe. Check out their "Ready-mix" colors and "Off-white" collection. Any of their pastels/tints would work, including those "outside the Big Four": apricot, peach, pale blues, light sage, creamy yellow, etc. All of these colors are so light that they will read as neutral. I think you get the idea.

Now, a little color education: ANY color that you absolutely LOVE will have a calming effect on you. I mean ANY COLOR. This means that "calm" is in the eye of the beholder. The other thing is that many designers insist on "pale, calm colors for the bedroom" because of psychological perceptions. But if you don't really want pale walls, then do what you want! Because any color can be "your calm color", it makes sense to go with what you like. If you love deep wine red, put in a red accent wall and red bedding. It all looks grey when the lights go out anyway! :)
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
rebecca
