Painting & Wallpapering/Painting over varnish

Hello,  I have some old plywood door fronts that were stained and then varnished.  I want to paint them with semi-gloss latex paint.  What is the best way to prep them.  Thanks.

I would wipe them with warm water and some type of degreaser (kitchen soap).  A thorough sanding to dull the varnish followed with an oil based primer.  It's getting more and more difficult locating oil products (primers), I would go to your local Benjamin-Moore dealer for this. Good Luck!
