Paleontology (Dinosaurs) - Extra crests---relating to teeth

Expert: Xxx Xxxxx - 10/22/2003

Question
Sorry, but I have another question:

1. What "extra crests" as in when the "extra crests become permanent in the Merychippus"?

Sorry again..I hope this isn't too much to ask..THANK YOU AGAIN!

Answer
Hi Pearl!

Hmmm... I'm not sure, but I think it's talking about Merychippus having more crests on its teeth that its predecessor.  The crests are the raised surfaces on the chewing side of a tooth.  Different species of animals (especially mammals) can be identified by the patterns on their tooth surfaces.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Rick Spears
