Subject: Recovering data from Handspring

Question
QUESTION: My Handspring Visor, battery powered, just died. Is it possible for it to be repaired? If not is it possible to recover the data that is stored on the backup module? What would be the best replacement PDA? I wish that this battery model was still available.

Thanks for your attention.

Sharon

ANSWER: Hi Sharon,

Yes, the visor's batter is possible to replace. I'm not certain on the difficulty factor, but as a rule - not generally too difficult to replace yourself. If you want someone to replace it for you - you can try message boards on brighthand.com or 1src.com for someone to do it for you.

If you performed a regular hotsync then your back up is on your computer - simply hotsync again when the battery is replaced.

If you didn't hotsync, then there is no back up - unless you backed up the data on the handheld to a card.

QUESTION: Thank you for your prompt reply. I am having problems getting online.
I should clarify that the my visor runs on a 1.5 volt AA battery and the back up is a separate "backuo modul".
Is there still a way t to recover my data?

QUESTION: Hello Brent,
I don't think that I am expressing my problem very well. I tried replacing the 1.5 batteries and there was still no power. I don't have hotsync backup, instead I have a backup modul that I insert in the back of the habdspring visor, I guess that it is so old that you do not know what I have,

Thanks so much for your efforts to help.

Answer
I've re-read the string and it appears you contradict yourself - one thread says you need to replace the battery and wish the battery was still available and the other says you have replaced the battery and you don't have power.

If it is the latter and you have replaced the battery and still don't have power, I suppose you have two questions - 1.Can the Visor be repaired so that it can power on and 2. If I can't get power can I recover the data from the back up on the data card?

The answer to question 1. is maybe. There are a couple of people that repair handheld on 1src.com and brighthand.com - once the power works, the data can be recovered from the card, problem solved.

The answer to question 2. is maybe. It depends on what program was used to back up on to the card. If that application is still available, it can be installed to your new handheld and you can recover the data.

I hope this helps.
