Panama/Renting a Car vs. Taxi Service

Question
Hi Lorena,

My husband & I are taking our two daughters (ages 7 & 4) on vacation to Panama. We plan to spend a couple of nights in Panama City to do some sight-seeing (canal, ruins, etc.) before spending the rest of our vacation at the Royal Decameron in Farallon. Would you suggest we rent a car or use taxis? Are taxi's available to take you all the way to Farallon or is there a (safe) bus service? Will my daughters be required to use children's car sets/ booster seats if we rent a car or use taxis?
Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

Gracias,
Chantell

Answer
Hi Chantell,
I suggest you use taxis or maybe take a tour.
Driving in Panama is crazy, streets are really bad and not signaled, finding a parking spot is a true nightmare.
According to law in Panama you are only required to wear the seatbelt IF you are the driver and if you are ridding next to the driver, not if you are seated in the back. This being said, your girls will not be required to use childrens car seats.
When going to Farallon Decameron, I understand that they can arrange getting you there by bus, which is what I would do.
I would recommend the taxi for local tours and getting around in the city but not to go all the way to Farallon which is about an hour or so from Panama City.
I hope this helps, have a safe trip.
Lorena

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding Panama, its people, culture, places to visit, places to watch out for, hotels to stay, how much your taxi fare should be... specific information on getting around on a safe manner.

Experience

I was born and raised in Panama, educated in American schools. Since I enjoy all related to Panama history, I try to keep myself updated on local happenings in the subject. I also enjoy traveling and the internet seems a wonderful tool to use, specially when you are your own guide (which I usually am)- so I am just willing to give some of the help I have received back.
