About Lorena Milanes
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding Panama, its people, culture, places to visit, places to watch out for, hotels to stay, how much your taxi fare should be... specific information on getting around on a safe manner.

Experience
I was born and raised in Panama, educated in American schools. Since I enjoy all related to Panama history, I try to keep myself updated on local happenings in the subject. I also enjoy traveling and the internet seems a wonderful tool to use, specially when you are your own guide (which I usually am)- so I am just willing to give some of the help I have received back.

Panama - Wholesale buying in Panama

Expert: Lorena Milanes - 2/14/2008

Question
I live in Jamaica and I will be opening a store of my own very soon.  Is it true that Panama is one of the best places to shop in places to buy items wholesale? Would you advise me to go their alone.

Answer
Orlene,
Yes, Panama is indeed one of the best places to shop for wholesale.
Most wholesale companies are located in an area called COLON FREE ZONE, which is about and hour and minutes away from the Panama City.
In the Free Zone you can find almost anything and its convenient location should make your shipping very easy.
I would see no problem in you going alone, but as in any place always be street smart.
Do not carry large sums of cash, try to pay with credit cards, wire transfers, travelers checks.
If I were you I would first choose a brand that you are interested in, find who represents it in Panama. Then from there you can contact them and they will most likely take you to the Free Zone, which is how it usually works.
After you are done with them you can go to the various showrooms in the zone and maybe catch some more in Panama City.
It all depends on what you are looking for.
Hope this helps.
Lorena
