AboutLorena Milanes Expertise I can answer questions regarding Panama, its people, culture, places to visit, places to watch out for, hotels to stay, how much your taxi fare should be... specific information on getting around on a safe manner.
Experience I was born and raised in Panama, educated in American schools. Since I enjoy all related to Panama history, I try to keep myself updated on local happenings in the subject. I also enjoy traveling and the internet seems a wonderful tool to use, specially when you are your own guide (which I usually am)- so I am just willing to give some of the help I have received back.

Question My wife and I are planning on spending 2-3 weeks in Panama this summer
with the idea of possibly retiring there in 1-2 years after this one. We are
mainly interested in retiring in the highlands (Sora, Boquette, Volcan, etc).
Any suggestions on how to go about planning the trip this summer, who to
consult about traveling around Panama, etc. We are not interested in hgih-
end accommodations but mainly want to get a feeling for what retirement is
like in Panama.
Answer Hi Gale,
Retiring in Panama and the places you mention has become very popular lately.
It all depends on what you are looking for. From the places that you list for example Boquete is a "bouquet of flowers" crowded with foreigners, retirees mostly -so if this is what you want, Boquete would be your choice.
Now, if you want a little peace, Volcan is the place. It is not crowded.. yet, prices MIGHT be a little better than Boquete, but as I said it all depends on what you are looking for. Sora I cannot comment on as I have not been there for years.
Boquete is 45 minute drive to David, the closest city - and Volcan is a bit farther.... so I guess you will have to see it for yourself.
I think in order to plan your trip and make it a succesful one I recommend you make a list of things you want to look at as they are important in you making a decision to relocate.
For example, health, transportation, housing, activities and so on.
After you have that list, I would work on a budget and from there look at your options.
I can help with a list of places to stay if you want, unfortunately for Boquete the prices have risen due to all the migration there.
On that same page, if you want to purchase anything now would be the time as prices do not cease to rise.
I hope this helps, please let me know if you need further assistance.
All the best.
