About Lorena Milanes
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding Panama, its people, culture, places to visit, places to watch out for, hotels to stay, how much your taxi fare should be... specific information on getting around on a safe manner.

Experience
I was born and raised in Panama, educated in American schools. Since I enjoy all related to Panama history, I try to keep myself updated on local happenings in the subject. I also enjoy traveling and the internet seems a wonderful tool to use, specially when you are your own guide (which I usually am)- so I am just willing to give some of the help I have received back.

Panama - Christo Negro festival in Portobelo

Expert: Lorena Milanes - 8/17/2009

Question
Hi Lorena,
I would like to photograph the 3-4 day Christo Negro festival this October in Portobelo.  Do you know of any hotels in there, or should I stay in Colon and drive everyday to the festival?  Finding parking may be crazy.  I could not find any hotels for Portobelo in Lonely Planet.

Thanks for your help.

Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,

Allow me to say that Colon is probably the highest ranking in crime in the Republic of Panama.
With that in mind, please be very very careful.
I knew a gentleman who use to stay at Hotel Andros in the city of Colon. The place was not luxurious but it served its purpose.
As I mentioned it is in Colon, not Portobelo. You would have to make arrangements in the hotel to take you to Portobelo.
An interesting fact is that A LOT OF people WALK there. Itīs a "payback" they begin walking days before... all dressed in purple, itīs an interesting site as you drive.
If you drive, be careful, there is no signalization, in fact I donīt think I would be able to drive there !
Parking will be crazy.... good luck
Lorena
