About Lorena Milanes
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding Panama, its people, culture, places to visit, places to watch out for, hotels to stay, how much your taxi fare should be... specific information on getting around on a safe manner.

Experience
I was born and raised in Panama, educated in American schools. Since I enjoy all related to Panama history, I try to keep myself updated on local happenings in the subject. I also enjoy traveling and the internet seems a wonderful tool to use, specially when you are your own guide (which I usually am)- so I am just willing to give some of the help I have received back.

Question
I heard that it is not recommended for a foreigner to drive in Panama City area

Answer
Hi Hans,
If you consider driving in Panama, there are things that you should know. One of them is that stop signs are not respected, red lights are very often ignored, honking your car horn is considered "normal" and the usage of map for instructions is almost unheard of.
Many foreigners are not used to driving under these conditions which is probably why someone mentioned to you that itīs not recommended.
People get really aggressive while driving specially because of the traffic which get worst everyday with public transportation being extremely inefficient.
If you plan to be "in the city" meaning banking area, Via Espaņa, Calle 50 I honestly recommend you walk. Besides if you are in the city there are no parkings to be found.
Distances are short, the weather is usually nice but, the problem here is that since drivers do not respect pedestrians and sidewalks are a mess walking can be a totally "new experience".
So, if I were you Iīd walk first and take a look and see if you feel comfortable driving in that atmosphere.
Good luck,
Lorena
