Question My father is 85 years old and has been on methadone for about 28 years. He was addicted to alcohol and demerol (doctor prescribed). He has demonstrated signs of dementia in the past. At 2 a.m. Wednesday he became disoriented, sweaty, panicky, and feared that he was loosing his mind.
We quieted him down after about 2 hours of pacing and extreme anxiety. Last evening around 8 pm. he again experienced the same symptoms. We took him to the emergency room where they performed vital signs, rectal exam, cat scan and blood tests. All appeared to be normal. At the hospital he seemed fine. We returned home at 2 a.m. At 3 a.m. he started the same. We are planning to have him see his medical doctor today but I am concerned about the links between methadone, dementia (Alzheimer) and panic attacks. Can you shed some light on the subject.
Answer Dear Josie,
I can only give some generalised information. Your father's panic attack may be due to a hypoglycemic episode. Please read:
I suggest that you ask your doctor for a referral to a Nutritional Doctor, a Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist.
