Panic Disorders/Attacks - panic attacks after an MRI

Expert: caroleena little - 10/30/2009

Question
Hello -

I've never had panic attacks before but after getting "stuck" in an MRI machine about 2 months ago, I've been having one heck of a time with them - it's terrible.
Several doctors have said the MRI had nothing to do with it but now everything seems to trigger these attacks - even a trip to the local "new age/relaxation" store made me have one. It's getting harder to leave home by myself and that is NOT like me.
I've always lived alone and done EVERYTHING on my own.  I would appreciate any help or suggestions you can offer -
thank you -
Victoria

Answer
Victoria,
I am going to try to explain this so you will understand me
and what I am trying to get across to you.
I have gone through EVERYTHING that you are describing!
Here is what you need to do!
First of all, there is something going on in your life for
the past few months or so that has you extra stressed out!
It could be anything from a relationship to work or school!
The fact that you had the MRI and that is when you had an
attack is ONLY that , this is when your anxiety level
went way up!
Why did it go up? Probably because there is something
going on that you were dreading and this is
when you let the anxiety get the best of you!
If you find you are dreading every day and the fact that
you are just waiting on the anxiety attack to come then,
you need to get on a temporary medicine such as (klonopin) and
stay on it while you work this through, after talking with your doctor.
You are only "freaking yourself out" and believe me this is true!
How do you stop freaking yourself out?
You either get a grip on the stresses in your life, eliminate
as much as possible and then your anxiety level will come down with it!

         ************** (GUARANTEED)*************

                      YOU HAVE THE POWER!!!!!

That is just about the bottom line!
You are getting to the stage now where, because of the
weird feelings you are experiencing from the "high anxiety level",
you are going into the second stage which is, phobias.
(scared to be alone, drive, go to the store, be on an elevator etc. etc.)
YOU MUST GET A GRIP ON IT NOW!!!
So what.... if you need to take a medication that helps you through
this tough time!

The point is, *if you refuse the help with your nerves about this, then
other phobias will come. They will come !!!!
I stayed in my home "safety zone" for one and a half years
because of it!  And had MANY phobias........

Do not let it get that far! You are very fortunate!!!!!
They did not have the help that they
do now days when I went through it.
Two "main" things!!!!

Be truthful with yourself about your life and make the changes you
need to bring down your stress level!
Get on a medication to help you through it, if you feel you
cant handle it on your own!
Let me know if you need me again, anytime!
My favorite saying!!!!

"Do the thing you are afraid to do most and the death of fear is certain"!

God Bless,
Carolina
