Question
When I was a child I aquired a skill for dealing with my stress . I would lie in bed and put my hands over my ears and rock side to side .When I was younger I would hum to escape to a previous point in time and I would feel really calm and refreshed when done or I would dose off . Later I would use music as a backdrop and would do it to almost daydream with very realistic ,almost travel back in time to different events .I stopped doing this around age 30 . I am a normal person, nurse by trade and have a wife and two children . I had two siblings that did a form of this also . My dad was an alcoholic and we grew up in a rough neighborhood. I always thought this was our way of coping . Any thoughts ?

Answer
Hi patrick,

You are not the only one who used to rock themselves to sleep as a child. Your father being a alcoholic may indicate that this is due to a hypoglycemic condition. Hypoglycemia is a form of pre-diabetic insulin resistance that can cause excess secretion of stress hormones. Te hypoglycemic condition May run in the family.

It can be treated by going on a hypoglycemic diet that aims at stabilising blood sugar levels.

that explains the connection between anxiety disorders and hypoglycemia. Going on a hypoglycemic diet should resolve the problems. If in doubt, please discuss with a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist.
