Paranormal Phenomena/My dinner with the dead.

Question
QUESTION: Hi Greg,

Since French is my first language, I apologize in advance for the quality of this message. I will try my very best to be as clear and precise as possible.

I had an extremely weird and vivid dream last week.

Long story short, my parents, my sister and I were sailing on what seemed to be a river surrounded by a dense forest. (Neither of us had been there before, this was not a memory of any sort.)

The forest was weird though: while it looked like a forest most of the time, it also would turn into a coliseum-like structure with collumns and archs from time to time.

At some point, the person who steered our small boat (here again, please excuse my restricted vocabulary) stopped and dropped us on one of the shores after my father paid him for the trip.

We all followed some paved road which led us to a table set outside where a bunch of people we knew were waiting for us as we were expected for diner.

But, all of our hosts were actually deceased relatives and friends of ours. Seriously : ALL of them were dead.

But, you know, since it was a dream, I guess all of it made sense to me then.

Diner went fine until my grandfather told me that another relative of ours would be visiting them very soon too.

That's when I woke up.

I told my parents about my dream the morning after and, while they agreed it was pretty creepy, we didn't think much of it. My mother told me I often had dreams like these when I was younger where I would have conversations with dead relatives. (According to her, I actually once ''spent a day'' with my grandmother who had just passed away , back when I was a child, and woke up after she had to cross a bridge and would not let me follow her (which apparently really upset me at the time).)

Thing is, that same day, we learned that my great uncle was diagnosed with cancer and that he only had a couple weeks left to live.

While I just considered the ''bridge dream'' I had as a child as my way of grieving,I find it hard to explain this last one.

See, I am a very rational, logical, science-oriented person. And none of these things I experienced are rational, logical nor science-oriented.

Is my experience something that CAN actually happen to some people? Can one receive messages from the dead?

Is my imagination too fertile? Where these dreams just coincidental?

Again, this dream felt extremely real and different from my usual dreams.

What is it exactly that I am experiencing? (If I'm experiencing anything at all.)

Thank you for your time, hope you did not have too much trouble understanding me,

A perplexed (and slighltly spooked) Sophie

ANSWER: Answer in French & English

Bonjour Sophie,

Greg Pocha, All Experts,Phénomènes Paranormaux

Hello Sophie,

Thank you for writing to me at All Experts / Paranormal Phenomena with your questions. I must apologize for the late reply but for some reason or another I was not notified that I had a question pending. Your English is just fine. I am also sorry to hear about your great uncle. I understand how the news must be affecting your family. It is obvious from my point of view that it is his time to cross over, his mission on earth is complete. I reach that conclusion from your letter as people from the spirit realm are expecting him.

First I would like to explain your dream in a scientific way. At some time in your life you may have learned about what happens during a near death experience [NDE]. A lot of the things you mention are similar to events that people experience during a NDE - The dark forest, the river, the boat and the majestic building are all things reported in a NDE. Even though you may not consciously remember learning about NDE's there is a good chance that sometime in your life you had and forgot about it. The subconscious mind is like a warehouse storing every little thing we have encountered. At times, especially in sleep, where the subconscious mind takes over these repressed, forgotten memories may surface. The name of this is "cryptomnesia".
One could also say that the dream was due to intuition and keen observance with the results embedding themselves in the subconscious mind with the dream being the minds attempt to sort out the stored information. If it were not for the outcome of the dream being supported by fact,-the diagnosis, I might agree.

In an NDE the person is often surrounded by darkness [in this case it is a forest. Contrary to popular belief the tunnel is not always the "darkness"]. There is also a boundary to pass from our realm to the realm of the dead., sometimes a fence, a bridge, sometimes a stream and in this case, a river. Once pass the boundary the passing person enters a grand city, usually of light, but not always. It is however always awe inspiring. They are usually met by family and friends. This indicates that the dying persons time has come and preparations are being made to accommodate the dying in the afterlife.

In your case I do not feel that the rational explanation above is correct. First, you seem to have psychic abilities and 2- there was a definite outcome of the dream. This indicates to me that the dream was precognitive. [There is a difference between precognition and premonition. Premonition is a more general feeling of something pending whereas precognition is more specific in the event, people, time and place.]

This is where it gets interesting. What happened to you was not only a precognitive dream, but it also similar to a pre-death vision. Pre-death visions are usually seen by the person who is dying. In these visions the dying is meet by family and friends who indicate to the dying person that their time to cross over is soon approaching. They can happen from a few weeks prior to death to a few hours preceding death. These differ from death bed visions in that death bed visions usually occur moments before passing. As well, in a death bed vision the people seen by the dying [and occasionally by those with them such as medical staff and bed side visitors] are there to escort the soul into the next stage of existence, the spirit realm. It is known as a Shared death vision when the living see what the dying see. Sometimes the living actually share the near death experience with the deceased up to the point of crossing the boundary, or as I call it, the event horizon.

I will take an educated guess that your great uncle may have had a similar event happen to him although he may not realize it, remember it or want to acknowledge it. I will go as far to say that he will have a death bed vision just prior to his passing. Because of your psychic connection, if you were at bed side at the time you might share the event with him. The people that he will see are the ones you say in your dream, -family who have come to take him home.

Now as fantastic as the above may sound, there are documented cases of NDEs, pre-death experiences and death bed visions. Often tending nurses, doctors and family have witnessed people coming to get the deceased, or at the very least, observed the dying person look at and converse with people that the living can not see. Unfortunately these events are often classified as hallucinations, and maybe some are... likely most are not! And this is where it is hard to classify what happens before and at death as paranormal. It seems to be very normal and that dying is merely part of a much larger personal existence, something like puberty. It is a stage of life, not an end to it. Bearing that in mind, your experience and you yourself are very normal.

Visions as I have spoke of are usually comforting and calming to those who experience them. Usually the dying no longer fear death after such an event and the passage is welcome. People who pass this way do not remain earth bound as a ghost. Instead the go happily and peacefully into the light where they themselves become spirits. It is nice to know that when your great uncle passes over that there is a place at the table waiting for him. And that while the living here on earth are mourning and crying, he will be at a dinner party with family alive and laughing and wondering what all the earthly fuss is about.

Sophie, I hope that this has helped answer some of your questions. There is so much mystery to death and often one answer opens up another question. If you have anything else that you feel that I can help you with I am here to help. I wish you and your family all of the best.

Warm regards,

QUESTION: Merci beaucoup!

Since you do not accept ratings, I figured this would be my way of thanking you for your answer.

I appreciate the fact that you added a possible scientific explanation. (Rational me, eh. ;) Although I agree that the concrete outcome of this dream makes it harder to stick to.) I don't think that dream was the forgotten memory of a previous NDE, but it was reassuring to learn that people could actually go through similar experiences, from either a scientific point of view or yours.

Overall, the information you provided me with was very helpful. I'm glad my english was not too hard to understand.

Again, thank you,

Sophie

Answer
Hi Sophie,

Thank you so much for your kind words, I appreciate them. I am glad that I could shed some light on what happened. You are most welcome.

Let me explain that I do not mean that you had an NDE and forgot about it. What I meant is that you may have read about NDEs in something such as a Reader's  Digest or other magazine or saw a program about it on television long ago. That information would have taken up residence in your brain. Over the years you may have forgotten ever having read the article or watched the program. Then years latter the info enters your mind without you knowing [or rather remembering] the source.  As the brain goes from conscious thought to subconscious thought during stages of sleep, that info may resurface. It is rather like hypnosis being used to help people remember details of something that happened to them in the past.

I'm glad that you approached this with a rational mind. As Hamlet says after seeing the ghost of his father, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." and as Albert Einstein said,"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of all true art and science."

Take care.
