Katie should have her mom see a doctor - preferably a neurologist - as she may have a medical condition which causes her to experience phantom cigarette smoke episodes.  If you check the web for medical reasons for smelling phantom cigarette smoke, there is a lot of information there.  I doubt highly there is any paranormal reason for this.  Katie just might save her mom's life by taking her to a doctor.  Others on the web have said they can cover their noses with objects to relieve the 'smoking' sensation.  This lady may have very bad sinuses or she may have a tumor.  Best to have it all checked out.

I have this happen to me as well. I had a CT scan done to rule out a tumor. nobody can explain it. Same thing though-if I cover my face with my shirt, it goes away. It started just over one year ago, and comes and goes. When I smell it-its everywhere, even hospital rooms. Its driving me crazy. I do not smoke. Nobody in my house smokes. I wish I could figure it out.

I, too, have been experiencing this same smoke spirit.  I have the gift of discernment of spirits; however, I do not believe this is a random spirit.  I believe it is a sent familiar to bring mind confusion and befuddlement.  I noticed that my intellect was waning while this spirit and cigarette smoke was around.  In addition, it comes after a certain family called my house for no reason.  Usually an unknown call would also come soon after their call.  I am still investigating because the Holy Spirit has not revealed to me who definitively is behind this.  Also, this smoke is very annoying and sometimes it blows very heavy in my face.  When I find the answer to why this occurs, I will definitely post it.

I have experienced a smell of cig smoke. It is always in different places, twice in my car when there were other people in the car with me, I asked if they could smell anything and they each said cig smoke.

It comes and goes and have not noticed any events that preceed or follow it.

I've spoken/called out to ask who it is but got no response.

I've been told I am a sensitive and have seen a few apparitions from time to time.

All in all, it was just a curious event and no harm or fear was with it.

Hi:

I've also experienced the phantom cigarrette smell periodically.  Although I would not call myself a medium, I am sensitive to spirits and smells.  Just a few days ago I expeienced the smell again while reading. I looked up just in time to see the fading outline of what appeared to be a person with a cloud of filmy smoke surrounding the silloutte.  I inquired if the entity needed something and then politely asked him/her not to smoke in the house because it bothered me.  After several minutes the smell lingered no longer.  Oh, and by the way, I'm the only one in my household who smells the smoke although I'm not the only one in my household who is a sensititve.

It happens to me too, though I smell nice things (vanilla, bubble baths, dishwashing liquid, flowers). I've had all possible problems ruled out (schizophrenia, tumors, epilepsy, etc), so it's none of that.

It doesn't happen often, but when it starts it goes on for a couple of days.

My sister smells them too (but we don't live together any longer, so we can rarely check). It might be some sort of sensitivity phenomenon, since we're both quite "weird" in that way.

I have also been experiencing the phantom cigarette smell.  It is very annoying because it is a smell that I dislike the most.  It has been happening more and more often, especially the past week.  I now smell it at work, in the vehicle, and when I am trying to go to sleep.  It smells like someone is blowing cigarette smoke right into my face.  I have asked whatever it is to stop but hasn't.  It seems to be getting worse.  Does any know what I can do to get this to STOP?  I need help!

The phantom smell of cigarettes will come and go with time. If you experience it, there is not much one can do about it. In some cases, it will completely dissappear. Good Luck!

I've had this happen 3 times. Once after my uncle died I bought his truck from my aunt I smelt the smoke and look in the mirror and saw the smoke. The next time was after my father in in law killed himself and one other time after a friend died. I only saw the smoke when my uncle died the other times I just smelt it. Weird.

This may be great news for some of you. I was experiencing the phantom cig smoke smell for several weeks and was getting very concerned. I tried to think of anything that I was doing differently that might be connected to the this phantom smell. Finally, I remembered that I had begun putting a drop or two of TEA TREE OIL on my toothpaste once or twice a day because I read that it was an effective disinfectant when used with toothpaste. I stopped this practice to see if it was connected, and a day or two later I had NO PHANTOM CIGARETTE SMELL! I have been phantom cig smell free ever since, so this was definately the culprit. Hopes this helps someone.

I know this is years after the last post, but this is what happened to me and my sister.  3 months ago I started smelling phantom cigarette smoke.  I would smell it sitting next to someone, and ask if they smelled it, and they did not.  I smelled it in the car, in the grocery line, and in the bed at night while watching tv.  It made me cough, I could taste it, my nose burned, etc.  I thought I needed to get my lungs checked it was so bad.  I casually mentioned to a sister in Louisiana.  She mentioned it to another sister in Louisiana.  I live in Georgia.  That sister was shocked.  The same thing had been happening to her for 3 months and neither one of us had mentioned it to each other. We asked each other what we had in common that would allow us to smell it and not the other two living sisters.  Our fifth sister died last summer (2014).  Our father died in May 2004.  May was when we started smelling it.  He died a long painful death from lung cancer.  He smoked until the day he couldn't anymore.  We figured it had to be him.  My sister remembered a nasty letter my father wrote before he died, which was supposed to be his life story, but turned out to be a piss and moan letter directed at me, my sister, and my deceased sister.  He directed that we read the letter after his death, in which we did, and it was very hurtful.  He was racist, and the letter made reference to my bi-racial grandson, my deceased sister's bi-racial family and her lifestyle, and my sister that also smelled the smoke for money she borrowed and never paid back.  One night I was laying in bed and it started so strong it was hurting my throat.  I let out a cough even.  I asked a friend to take a picture where I was laying.  She gently lay across the bed and took a video with her smart phone.  The video depicted long white streaked of bright white crossing all over me.  I suppose that is how the smell of the cig smoke got inside me.  I have it on video, and I am convinced it is out father only because of the back story I have to tell.  We decided to forgive him, and I talked to him and did just that.  I didn't even remember the letter at first because it was so long ago.  But I told him I wasn't mad, and I know he was sorry.  I told him the cig smoke was a mean thing to do and that it was hurtful.  I haven't smelled it again.  It's gone, but I still have the video.  It was never scary.  It was actually amazing to see proof of the afterlife in it's purest form.  However, my sister started smelling it again.  She wasn't totally convinced that it was our father.  She read somewhere where it was demonic and she was clinging to that thought when I saw her last weekend at a funeral for a cousin.  We slept in the same bed, and I didn't smell it, but when I got up to leave, she smelled it.  We had just had a long debate that evening about the video and what I thought it was.  She wasn't convinced.  And, she had more issues with him than I did.  I don't know what or who it was, but I assumed it was our father since he died from lung cancer.  I don't think he was playing a prank on us.  The other two living sisters have not had this experience, and he said nice things about them in the letter at his death.  Maybe it has something to do with our Mother and sister passing last summer that gave him the strength to come back to make amends.  He wasn't the nicest person in life, so maybe he had a lot of challenges to reach the place called heaven.  Who knows.  All I know is I have it on video and it is unreal.  It happened to me.

As a certified paranormal investigators, my wife & I would like to help by answering questions related to paranormal activity (read: ghosts & hauntings) and the investigation of it. We can provide expertise based on current literature, information from attending lectures by authors of the subject and several years (and counting) of personal investigative experience, most recently with our own team C.P.I. My wife and I tend to investigate from the standpoint of providing our clients with a true explanation of what they are experiencing...we do not go into any investigation expecting a house/area to be haunted.
