Parenting K-6 Kids - 5 yearl old kissing classmates in school

Expert: Mona R. Spiegel, Ph.D. - 12/14/2006

Question
My boyfriend has a 5 years old son that lives with him in his parent's house. His son told him that he has a girlfriend just like him at school and he kissed her on her lips 10 times. He also said that he didn't tell the teacher because it's a secret. Is this a normal behavior for him to be copying us and lip kissing his classmates? What should we do?

Answer
Dear Sarah,

There is a phrase, "Children learn what they live."

Whatever behavior that your son sees at home becomes permissible for him.  Therefore, if you think that he's not acting appropriately, it might be time to set stronger boundaries between public and private behavior at home.

Sincerely,
Dr. Mona Spiegel
