Question Hi, My son is 7 and has been doing fine the first semester of first grade but for the last couple of weeks he has been acting out in class, such as refusing to do his work and pushing chairs. First grade seems to be easy for him academically but he worries about making mistakes and he's already concerned about how hard 3rd grade will be. last week he had a substitute teacher and it was a terrible week that change really messed him up. I'm a single mom and he has never been with anyone else other than my mother who cared for him since he was 8 wks old so that I could go back to work. I not only think that he has anxiety about things that will happen in the future but that he has separation anxiety also . The teachers and principal are fabulous and have been working with our problems but I just do not know what else I can do. Kindergarten was sort of the same way but after the first month he became more comfortable and the rest of the school year was great. To add to all of this confusion one of our dogs died last week and now I think this plays a part. Any advice, PLEASE!

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I was out of town. Anxiety is a common problem with small children as is seperation. I had a child that was so worried all the time he couldn't relax for fear he would fail also. I developed a "fear-factor" reward chart that worked for over 10 years in my home. I wrote a book after my children had left my home and all the charts are kid tested and mother approved. FROM COMBAT ZONE TO LOVE AT HOME is written like a workbook and it gives step by step proceedures on how to overcome these problems with the child. It is done so happily and cheerfully that the child doesn't even realize he's being taught until one day he will say to you, "Thanks for the Happy Faces mom, I feel a lot better." With the HAPPY FACE TOKEN SYSTEM child begins to do things outside of his comfort factor that you couldn't get him to do with all sorts of prodding before. You could use this system to say something like: "Every time you (____fill in the blank)i.e. push in your chair as the teacher asks, you may have 1 happy face token. OR When you do your school work, or raise your hand to share, or make a friend, or get ready for school happily and cheerfully, you may have 1 happy face token. Usually one thing that is hard for him will become a motivation to get the happy face.
