Is this normal for a boy that has always been even tempered, all of a sudden start hitting and being destructive?

Well Barbara it is normal but could have many different triggers.   Often kids this age are beginning school or daycare and are picking up behaviors from other kids.  Have there been any changes in his life?  Loss of a family member or pet.  His anger is coming from somewhere and if you had an idea of where then that may help you to help him work through it.  Ensure you are giving him lots of attention and praise for positive behavior.  He also will require consequences for his negative behavior such as time outs of loss of a toy.  Part of this could simply be his testing the waters to see how much he can get away with.  Good Luck
