Subject: My 8 yr old step-son

Question
I have an 8 year old step son who is very active and at most times does not listen. My husband and I have been together for about 5 years now. I have a 7 year old of my own which lives with my husband and I. My step son lives with his mother. My step son does not have respect for me. His mother is constantly in our business. If I discipline him he goes back and tells her but of course does not say what he did. I feel as if I am not supposed to do anything but take the responsibility to take care of him when he is over. My husband has all respect from my daughter and there is not interference when he disciplines her. I want the same and I deserve it! I should not be treated this way. What do you suggest I do to earn the respect I deserve and to stop his mother from being involved?

Answer
Cheyanne:  Unfortunately you can't do anything to keep the mother out of it.  Bitter is bitter, and you can't control or change her.  Your husband needs to make sure that your step son respects you.  That is his son, and he needs to take care of that.  He doesn't have to like you, but in your home he does have to respect you.  Talk to your husband and tell him you have had enough and he needs to step up and step in!
