Parenting--Toddlers/Infants/Pre-Schoolers - 2-year old scratching

Expert: M Kay Keller - 7/2/2007

Question
It all started when she got mosquito bites all over her.  Then she wouldn't let the heal. Scratching even now when they are 90% healed. making the worse. Also scratching at her back. Near the bottom of her neck and shoulder blades. There is no rash or bites there. Just the hair touching there sometimes.  So she seems to have a little obsession with scratching wether it be bites or hair tickling her back.  I want to know what to do so it doesn't get any worse. Thank you.

Answer
Dear Tracy:

I don't mean to offend you however I am going to be blunt. Sounds like she is aggravated by itching. Have you tried some over the counter anti-itch creme? Or take her to the doctor for a prescription to relieve the itching. Some children are just more sensitive than other to bites.

I happen to be one of those people myself and sometimes just the impression on my skin that a mosquito has landed there is enough to send me on a scratching spasm.

If she is sensitive there is a great paper back book I highly recommend. It is called "The Sensitive Child." I recommend this book because it talks about sensitivity physically, emotionally and socially. Often a child with one of these sensitivities is also sensitive in other areas as well. It is a great book full of explanations.
