Parenting--Toddlers/Infants/Pre-Schoolers - unusual potty fear

Expert: Evelyn Petersen - 1/21/2009

Question
this may sound foolish but my 3 1/2 year old daughter has recently become terrefied of the toilet...it wouldn't make me so frustrated but she has been potty trained for a year now.....and i know the source of her fear....this is the oddest part.........
about a week ago the toilet overflowed on her while flushing ....and she went bolistic.....i can't even get her to go near a toilet now cause she thinks the water will come out.........HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Jody this does happen....It will pass.
You need to keep reassuring her that it does not happen very often...show her how the toilet works...take the top off to show her why it might keep running.

Can she use another toilet in the house?  If not and if the above explaining does not work, you may need to let her go back to using a potty chair in the bathroom next to the toilet.  Keep reassuring her that the other toilet is ok...show her that it is.  Evelyn
