Parenting--Toddlers/Infants/Pre-Schoolers - Unhappy Son

Expert: Evelyn Petersen - 11/2/2009

Question
I have an 11 month old son who is a handful! He was born screaming, and known at the hospital as the screaming baby. The nurses in the nursery wouldn't even keep him. He was finally diagnosed with colic and reflux. He has nearly quit spitting up from the reflux, but he is still nearly impossible to keep happy! He whines at least half of the time he is awake, and he often cries and throws himself backwards when he is upset. I dread taking him anywhere because everything is such a battle with him. He is a very healthy, intelligent child. I have not really found anything abnormal about him. He has a horrible temper, and nearly no patience. What can I do about this? I am so tired!

Answer
Dear Lisha,
I feel so sorry for you....this is unusual.  I think you need to take him to another doctor for a second opinion.  I have known some children who were sleep deprived who acted like this...they just did not know how to get to sleep or get back to sleep.  I have known of other children who had food allergies that caused this sort of thing, and still others who had nerve problems that could only be found with a neurological exam.  You need to find out what is causing this, even if it takes time and some tests.  See if your community has a Child Find organization.  These people work with intermediate school districts and hospitials and agencies to find children who have special needs and they have free testing and services.  Your school distric may know how to reach Child Find in your area, or your local Head Start program will know, and so would Social Services.  Do some calling and get some professional help.  Evelyn
