Question QUESTION: Hi there, i am a mother of three and have come upon an unusual problem with my 15 month old son. When it was time to turn his car seat forward, we didn't make it more that past the driveway before he started screaming, turning red and gasping for air. We turned it back to rear facing and took him in to his doctor, who then told me he has anxiety and will grow out of it as he gets older. This was 3 months ago and it seems to be getting worse. He now does the same thing if we lift him too high too fast or even if i push him in the stroller and i am power walking. Its becoming a concern for us, and with no help from our doctor we are asking for ANY solutions or advice that may help.
ANSWER: Dear Eleanor,
Does he have any problem with balance or walking. I could be something along the lines of motion scares him. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. There are balance disorder specialist and not all people with balance disorder have a hard time walking however problems with motion maybe something to consider. Maybe have him evaluated.
In the meantime he probably does feel anxious. Tried massage and anything else to alleviate the anxiety?
Best Wishes!
Kay

QUESTION: He doesn't have any problem with balance or walking, actually he has been on the go since he was 10 months old, and thinking back he has had this problem since he was about 3 months old and i tried to put him in the baby swing. Do you have any suggestions on what i can do to help him relax before a car ride, besides medicating him?
Answer Dear Eleanor,
I never advise medication and not being a medical doctor would not interfere with what anyone else suggests.
I do advise having him screened for a balance disorder. He may walk fine however it sounds like motion is an issue for him. It would be silly to let him suffer. Most balance disorder specialist do not advocate medicine. They actually have exercises and alternative solutions for balance disorders. I only know this because I was recently diagnosed with one myself. Suffered for years with motion sickness even though I could walk, roller skate and ice skate....I couldn't stand riding in the car, on boats, or rides at the fair!
The good news is you may have picked up on something while he was young and something can be done to correct it who know unless you check!
