he sounds like he is coughing so bad he gags,is this due to disease? it scares me,

Answer
Hello Beverly and thanks for writing,

I will do my best to compile PD-specific information for you.  PD is a terrible disease which slowly depletes pretty much every bodily function – much like ageing in reverse until you’re back to being like a baby and requiring total care for all your needs except the patient is a strong adult with adult moods and feelings.

There are several common symptoms of PD that may be contributing to the coughing you describe including changes in muscle tone and the dysphagia may be causing the gagging.  You should discuss this with his physician as there are some treatment options worth trying to ease his swallowing and help him to clear his phlegm.

I hope this helped answer your question,
Margot
