Subject: VOTING RULES

Question
Actually, several connect5ed questions, John. First, I've been registered for years in IL as a democrat. This year I'm conflicted about who to vote for...thus, my questions about Independents. 1) Can they vote in the IL Primary? 2) If yes, when would the change in registration have to have taken place? 3) If I can't switch, and I choose a Republican or Democratic ballot, if my person doesn't get the nomination, could I vote the opposite party in November? (Sorry, I'm embarrassed about all I don't know on this subject.)

Answer
Dear Joy,

I'm not familiar with the specifics of Illinois election law, so I don't know who can vote in primaries. I just took a look at a downloadable registration form, and it didn't seem to ask about party -- but if you are registered as a Democrat, I guess there must be a way to do that!  The registration deadline for the primary was January 8, so you can't change at this point. To get more specific information, I'd suggest calling your local election department.

Since the November ballot is secret, no one knows which party you are voting for, so you are free to vote for the candidate of your choice.

John
