Question
Mr. Moore,

I am a recent graduate with a B.A. in Political Science, all of my class mates
seem to be going to law school for graduate education before geting into the
political field. I just want to work in politics and have NO interest in being a
litagator.

So, I know a few schools out there offer a MSPS in Professional Politics/
Political Management (Such as GW, Suffolk and Akron) But are there others? I
cannot seem to find specific listings anywhere because the programs are so
rare.

What do you recommend? Are these degrees worth it? Can they really
enhance your career in the political world?

Thanks so much!

James

Answer
James:

I am familiar with the programs you suggested. George Washington University has numerous prestigious programs for those interested in professional campaign management. If nothing else you will be provided networking opportunities.

There are no specific credentials to serve as professional staff on a campaign. It is something that can only be learned by experience, and such educational program may enable you to gain practical and theoretical experience.

Many candidates hire political consulting firms who in turn only hire those with advanced degrees. However, some candidates, particularly those with limited resources, hire staffers directly, requiring minimal education.

Furthering your education will always enhance your opportunities and prospects though it may be no indicator of success.

Many notable campaign managers do not possess advanced degrees. As the field becomes more competitive with gradually more individuals interested in staffing campaigns, it will eventually become a prerequisite.

I wish you the best on your journey. I welcome you to write me again.
