About Mary Lee Ferrin
Expertise
I can answer any questions about hosting or participating in a murder mystery party.

Experience
I have been hosting murder mystery parties for 9 years. I owned a murder mystery dinner theater for a year. 4 years ago I started writing my own murder mystery parties and began selling them on the web. Within weeks I had to choose between my dinner theater and my party kit site. I just could not do both. I love writing so I choose to continue this and I have never looked back. My site Dinner and a Murder Mystery Games is one of the largest most authorative web sites on the web relating to murder mystery parties. I have an extensive forum in which I answer murder mystery questions. I also write articles. http://www.dinnerandamurder.co

Organizations

Publications
I was featured in the Tennessean & my articles are published on the web in numerous places.

Education/Credentials
Numerous creative writing classes, art classes.

Awards and Honors
I have won some cool site and game site awards in the past, but I no longer post these on my site.

Past/Present clients
I have quite a few famous clients, but I would never reveal their identity to protect their privacy.

Question
I want to throw a murder mystery party. But I can't spend that much on one of the kits. Is it hard to write my own mystery? Do you have any tips on how to write one?

Thanks

Answer
I would highly suggest not even attempting to write your own game. It takes us almost 1,000 hours to write a game. Games average $40 - $75. There are some people that charge much higher, but you would really be throwing your money away if you spent more than that.

Believe me when I say that the expense is well worth it, compared to the time of writing it yourself. In addition to that, if you write a bad game or mess something up, your party is going to flop and your hostess status will suffer. This is just not something I would ever suggest anyone do themselves. So many of our customers are those that had your thought and then realized they were in way over their heads.

You will spend more on drinks then you would spend on a murder mystery party kit, which will provide you with your full nights entertainment. If you cannot afford a murder mystery party kit, then I would suggest just throwing a theme party, which will be more affordable.

If you do decide to throw a murder mystery party, you can see a list of quite a few very good interactive murder mystery kits here:

We also have a huge forum, which can tell you a lot about murder mystery games and help you make the best choice. Here are the topics on How to Host a Murder Mystery Party:

I hope this helps you some. Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but it is the best advice.
