Subject: private school auction fundraiser

Question
For the past several years the private years-8th grade school our 3 children attend has had an auction.  I am in charge of the party this year.  Nothing to do with securing the auction items!  I love any excuse for a party and am so excited.
In the past we have used the same theme of Denim and Diamonds.  It is time for a change.  We would like to keep the party very casual in dress.  It is held off campus, so numbers and parking are not problems.  We just need a new theme, invitation ideas, decorations, special drink thoughts, etc.
Instead of Denim and Diamonds, it was suggested that we do Bluejeans and Bluegrass which I loved at first, but now I think it may be just so much like Denim and Diamonds that people will not attend because they are tired of the same old thing.
We have the party at the end of January and that time really needs to stay the same.  We are located in Georgia so the weather is cold that time of year, tent rental for overflow numbers along with heaters are not a problem.
Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Answer
Hi

I don't know how much I can help you here as I am not familiar with the concept of a school auction and have not managed to create a picture in my mind.

All the auctions I work with here in the UK are lavish sit down banquets with a Silver Service Dinner, then an auction followed by dancing, casino etc etc.

I also suspect that themes that go well here may be very different. Of course many follow current movies, so James Bond etc is popular. I mention this in particular because I believe people's mentality will change depending upon the theme. IF they are actinglike they are wealthy, all dressed up, drinking champagne, dripping in diamonds, winning on gaming tables etc then it's likely they are way more likely to bid eapecially where the prizes are related to that lifestyle ie holidays, hotel stays, papmer weekends, signed photos by celebs etc etc.

So we hold Hollywood Nights, Bollywood, Cruise Ship themed, Rio Carnival, New Orleans Riverboat, etc. If you need more relaxed .... I honestly don't know what would be relevant in your area at that time of year.

Sorry can't be more helpful and good luck...

John
