Party Planning - 50th anniversary inviation

Expert: Patty Sachs - 6/6/2009

Question
Was planning a "come and go" type party.  Now the couple wants to renew their vows in a brief ceremony at the party.  How can we word the inviation.  The party will be for about three hours.  Come and go is sitll best.  Don't want to encourage folks to stay for three hours.

Answer
Renee:

I just attended a party exactly like what you are thinking of with a ceremony.  There was no mention of the ceremony so I missed it.  I would have liked to see it.  This was a dinner dance tho, from 5-11...too long, I thought.

I would call yours an Open House from 3-6 and mention that there will be a short repeating of vows ceremony at say, 4:30. That will allow for guests to come at 3 and stay for the ceremony and others to come at 4:30 and stay until 6.  Depending upon how you word it, people will still come at 3 and stay until 6.  Light snacks, dessert, coffee, light or other beverages, will be appropriate for those hours.  If you go past 6 you are getting into the dinner hour which will call for slightly heavier fare.  Maybe 2-5ish would work for you.

If you are concerned about crowding guests, this is a good plan.  However, if you are just concerned about food and beverage consumption, that doesn't change much if people stay one hour or 3--they eat the same.

Best to you for a successful event.  I hope these ideas have helped in your decisions.

Cordially,

Patty Sachs
