Question
QUESTION: Dear John

I am a volunteer fundraiser for a childrens charity in Cape Town, SA - organising a ladies lunch - demond & diamonds theme - in order to keep costs down, can you give me some tips for table decor.  The tables are set out in rows of 10. We are bringing the denim theme - with denim goodie bags, but not sure to dress tables - on a minimum budget.  Which means the less we spend on decor the more goes into the charities bank.  We also don't want to make the decor looked scaled down to cut on cost?
Any advise you can give us - is appreciated
Diane

ANSWER: Hi Diane

Firstly I am confused over your theme. I looked up "demond" and cannot find a meaning for it. What does it mean?

Clearly the table decor should reflect the theme so until I know, I am stuck.

Then you mention "denim" .... that's lovely, makes a great contrast with the hardness and cispness of diamonds and of course represents the opposite end of the scale.

For table decor (on what I know already) I'd certainly keep it simple. I am also unsure what you mean by "rows of 10". Are these circluar tables and you have so many people that you have maybe 30 or 40 or 50 tables, with 10 per row? I cannot get any idea of the size of the venue, numbers of people therefore scale of it all. SO I cannot visualize what size the table decorations need to be for impact.

Let me know and I'll offer my thoughts....

Answer
Hi

I think I would translate Diamonds into all kinds of decor items thyat are glass, silver, transparent. And use this as the primary table decor. So, white cloths, perhaps silver(ish) runners and have centerpieces like large fishbowls, half filled with water and long stemmed white flowers coiled inside plus some sprayed grasses..... then sit in the middle of each, right down on the bowl rim, large bunches of white flowers (whatever is seasonal where you are). So this is clear and white and glistens. If not whole stems inside, how about some lightly crushed cellophane plus some white flower heads.

You either have a denim runner or denim squares these bowls sit upon. You could raise them and cover plinths (boxed, bricks etc) with denim.

Place mats should be denim rectangles ... you could get old jeans and cut them up! Seams and pockets would work great IF the surrounding area is high key and classy.

Perhaps also one other touch of denim somewhere .... this could be napkins (probably denim colored, not actual!) ....

I think you should look at 75% - 85% being white, silver, glass with max 25% touches of denim.

Lighting will be key here ...with 'pin spots' on the fish bowls, so they glisten like diamonds.

Hoping this is the start of some solutions for you...
