Expert: John Gordon - 9/26/2009

Question
I'm moving away and i will like to throw a party to tell everyone how much i will miss them... I'm planning to have have the party in my house and just about 20 people...
Can you give me some ideas so the party wont have any boring seconds?? i have no time line... but i am moving on October 15th.

thank you very much!!

Answer
Wow Tiffani

You are moving pretty soon .... my guess is that you'll have SO much to talk about with just 20 close friends there won't be any boring seconds.

However, maybe you should prepare something. What I would do is:

1) Have a large board (an A1 sized sheet?) on an easel plus some pens etc and ask everyone there to contribute a message, memory, drawing ..... obviously announce what you wish everyone to do ... maybe add a header to it, something like 'Farewell to Tiffani - 15 October 2009'

This will not only give you a wonderful gift from everyone, but create a talking point at the party as people add and read what others have given.

2) The other thing I would offer is that you give a small speech. To add to this, collect together perhaps 6 or so items which remind you of special occasions, events, people, times where you have been living that you'll miss but treasure. The items could be anything that you have already or something printed off or gathered. They can be literal ... ie a ticket or photo but also represent in any way, so a hard sweet may link to a story about something being long lasting and sweet and memorable and you always want more!

Get them out of a bag or box one by one to give interest and meaning to your thank you speech.

UIn this way you are all contributing to the party and there is no way it'll have even a second of dullness!
