Question
My husband and I, with our son, are moving in a few months across the country. My friends and family want to throw us a moving party, in which guests give us house warming type gifts, since we are moving with practicall nothing at all. I'm unsure about how to word the invitations or what this type of party would be called? We need to order to invitations soon, so I really need some help with wording! Thanks!

Answer
Hi Ashlyn,

Sounds like you have some big changes ahead.  I have to be honest; I really hate the idea of throwing a party with the intention of getting things from your guests.  It goes against the purpose of the party, which is to celebrate something memorable with your loved ones.  It is really not cool to include anything in the invitation wording that tells guests you expect a gift.

Here's my advice how to throw your party and not come across as though you are looking for freebies to set up your new house. (I know some of your friends and family have offered, but believe me someone will take it the wrong way...they always do.)

Someone in the family or one of your friends should be hosting the party...not you.  It should be pitched as a going away party.  The proper way to let guests know what you would like IF they would like to bring a gift is through word of mouth.  Family and friends can spread the word that you won’t be moving with much and let them know where you are registered (if you are). Don't put in a registry card, or ask for gifts in the invitation. It's bad etiquette:0)

As far as invite wording, stick the basics:

Bon Voyage!

Join us in wishing the (insert name) well in their new adventure!

Where: location of party
When: date of party
Time: what time so you want guests to arrive

RSVP:  to who and by when

Hope this helps!

Have a great party and a safe trip!
