Question
It's my grandmother's 90th surprise birthday celebration. This celebration will be held indoors in August. I do not have a theme nor an idea of how to decorate. My grandmother's favorite color is blue and she loves flowers. I've considered using two different shades of blue table cloths, but which two? Furthermore, I've contemplated using a floral centerpiece, but which flower and would a white flower on each table be too monochromatic?  My grandmother has stated that she likes all flowers.  Also, she does not have a favorite flower; however she is very fond of white flowers.

Answer
Hi Fai

Although you say you don't have a theme ... you're doing pretty well with ideas already!

I must say that it's always hard to give any advice knowing SO little. Ideas, for example, for an evening Banquet in Rome in August would be very different to those needed for a tea party in Canada. For that reason, I am unable to help much ... but some personal comments on your suggestions:

I'd go with her preferences for white fl;owers, and set against a rich blue cloth will look fresh and vibrant. However, food doesn't look good on blue and it also reflects up onto people's face and that's not flattering either, so whilst a rich blue for a base colour is good, I'd certainly add an over layer of perhaps white.

I wouldn't be concerned about any monochromatic effect, on the contrary, that can look great, so long as the flowers are of good quality and interesting arrangements. Using crushed transparent foil in the water, or half limes or whatever else is fashionalbe and in season for your locality will create a lift in texture and tones.

After all ... people and food add colours to the setting!

I think that's all I can add for now ....
