Question
MY WBC IN DEC, 'O7 WAS 4.2 AND HAS DECREASED TO 3.4 6/24/08 (SIX MONTHS TIME). MY ANA TITER IS 1:160; ANTINUCLEAR ABS 15 REFERENCE RANGE 7.5; AND MY ANA PATTERN IS SPECKLED.  SHOULD I BE WORRIED ABOUT LUPUS OR IS THIS A FALSE/POSITIVE TEST RESULT?

Answer
Hello June:

The antibodies and ANA titre alone are not sufficient for diagnosis of Lupus.

ANA titre / antibodies can be high in a number of autoimmune diseases like arthritis, scleroderma etc. Autoimmune diseases of Liver, thyroid and other infectious diseases may also raise the titre.

The raised ANA levels along with other diagnostic criteria are used to establish Lupus.

Your physician will read these test results in conjunction with your signs / symptoms and then arrive at a diagnosis.
