Question I was in the emergency room the other day with intense stomach pain and pulsation in the abdomen. The thought it might be an aneurysm but it wans't - so maybe it's simply stomach flu. So that's good. Anyway, while in there they ran a bunch of blood tests. I got the results back and I had some questions...
Diabetes runs in my family. My Glucose level was 110. I don't think I had eaten in a while. Is that high? Can glucose levels jump up when fighting an infection or if you're very stressed (as I am in my life at the moment).
The Sodium levels were 135. Just barely low.
The BUN level was 7. Just barely low.
My lymphocyte level was low at 18.3%
My Monocyte levels were high at 8.9%
Everything else normal.
Should I take these results and follow up with my doctor? Or are the borderline results not a big deal?
thanks
Answer Hello Mark:
I would not unduly worry about these blood tests.
Blood glucose tests measure how well your body processes sugar.
What you had was a random blood sugar test...one which is taken at any point of time regardless of time at which food is taken. This should be less than 200
On the other hand a fasting blood sugar is when you have had nothing to eat or drink for minimum 8 hours and that should be less than 100.
I think yours is within normal range.
Stress and infection do raise the blood sugar levels. However in people who do not have diabetes the body can control the levels and prevent them from swinging too much.
