Pathology/Elevated AST(SGOT) & ALT(SGPT) Levels

Question
I recently had blood work performed which indicated that my AST and ALT levels were high (all other values were within normal range).  I understand that these levels can be elevated not only due to liver damage or disease but also from muscle damage.  I recently began a rather rigorous weight training regime with a personal trainer (rigorous to the point of muscle edema in the chest/upper arm areas for 2 days after a workout).  Could this be the reason for the high levels of AST and ALT?  Are there tests which would prove this or rule it out?  Thanks...rc

Answer
Hello Rocky:

AST and ALT are raised in skeletal muscle trauma.
It depends on how much the values are raised. AST is raised more than ALT in muscle damage.

Other causes have to be ruled out to confirm muscle trauma related rise. If you are other wise healthy it is most likely related to your exercise program. You should reduce the intensity of exercise and a month later have the tests repeated.
