Pathology - pet scan and fna

Expert: Neha Dahiya MD - 6/19/2009

Question
In Oct. 2009 I had a pet scan to check nodes, (I previously had thyroid cancer) only nodes that were positive were 3 axillary nodes, mild glucose uptake. Had FNA in December 08,showed reactive, hyperplastic nodes. Also had a sonogram
and I was told they did not look bad, I was then told to come back in May 09 for a followup sonogram.  I did and they told me the nodes were the same and not to worry about
it. Is this correct or should I look for more answers.

Answer
Hello Nancy:

The lymph nodes are where the cancer cells would travel and then from these spread elsewhere. If the nodes are of the same size and shape then it is unlikely they have changed in any way.

If there was an increase in size another FNA would be required.
