Pathology - Mild lymph nodes enlargement

Expert: Neha Dahiya MD - 7/1/2009

Question
I had shingles 3 months ago and as a result my right armpit lymph node was enlarged. One month later after pain in the throat I found that I had an another enlarged in the neck right next to my upper throat. Still have the sore throat and sinus problems but not pain. Last week after diarrhea I found 2 another in my groin (around 0.7 and the other even smaller). Blood and urine tests are normal. Ultrasound in the neck showed that the lymph there was 1cm and the rest fine. My pathologist told me that as they are less than 1 cm I am fine and needle biopsy can not be done in so small lymph nodes. Still have mild sinus problems in my nose and sore throat plus diarrhea. Should I ask for a second opinion or for additional tests in case is lymphoma?

Answer
Hello George:

Lymph nodes are tiny centers in the body which respond to various stimuli and produce cells which fight against infection and other insults to the body.

Since you had herpes infection followed by sore throat and sinusitis all these can lead to nodes being palpable.

However since they are less than a cm in size they are extremely difficult to be examined by needle biopsy.

You should wait for your symptoms to subside and the nodes should come back to normal size. Please do not worry about lymphoma at this stage.
If the nodes become further enlarged consult a  doctor.
