He was married twice, first in 1942 to Greta Konen (shortened from her native Finnish "Konannen") Rice (from her previous marriage to businessman Charles Rice) Peck. Greta was the hairdresser for the acting troupe with which Gregory was performing at that time. After three sons and thirteen years, they divorced in 1955.
Also in 1955, he re-married, this time to French journalist Veronique Passani, whom he met when she interviewed him during the filming of Roman Holiday. They had two children together, and remained very happily married until his death.
