About David Olson, MD
Expertise
I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.

Topic: Pediatrics

Subject: 11 month old refusing afternoon nap

Question
Dr. Olson, I think I may have asked a variation of this question before, but my 11 month old son has decided that he doesn't want to take his afternoon nap.  He will usually take a morning nap (at least during the week with the nanny)for about 1 - 1.5 hours starting around 9 am.  We put him down for an afternoon nap at 1230 pm, but he will frequently not take this nap (just plays in his crib).  He also sometimes skips his morning nap and will take a short (30-60 minute) nap starting at around noon.  We put him to sleep at about 6 pm and he wakes at betwee 5 and 6 am, with several limited wakings per night.  I guess I have a few questions:
1)Is he too young to transition to a single nap a day? If he is not, how do I accomplish this transition.
2) I have heard that putting him to bed earlier could help.  He's already going to bed pretty early, but would this help him take his 2 naps per day?
Please help!

Answer
Hi, Monica,

Our youngest of two daughters stopped all naps at 9 months.  No morning and no afternoon.  If his internal clock is set like hers was, then you may be lucky to get one nap.  He is sleeping great at night and I would just accept that this is the way things are.

Good luck and be thankful for the wonderful night time sleep he does, Dr. Olson
