Topic: Pediatrics

Subject: protein and blood in urine and stomach pain

Question
My son is 12 years old and for the last year has being having stomach pain with multiple visits to the bathroom when this happen. I took him to the doctor and we found blood and protein in the urine, does this has anything to do with his stomach pain?

Answer
It certainly could.  This may be a urinary tract infection or some disease of the kidneys.  Did the doctor determine the cause of the blood and protein in the urine?  He should have a urine culture done, and if this has been going on for so long, he should also have blood tests looking at kidney function and causes of inflammation in the kidneys.  He probably also needs some xray studies of the kidneys.
