Question
Dear Dr.Venketaraman,

My daughter (4 yrs) is having tiny red spots scattered on her soft and hard palate. She is not complaining of any pain or sore throat. She is eating well and active. Should I be concerned about the red spots. What might be causing them..? Mono..? Low Platlet count..?

Appreciate your reply
Thanks in Advance.

Answer
well, its not that easy to call any red dots on palate as petichae, they may be just focal capillary hyperemia due to inflammation.

although all are labelled as petichae, its more and more commonly seen in any pharyngitis, may be in adenoviral throat infections. sometimes in mono.

low platelets may be incidental due to another problem and usually not related to this unless there are also petichae elsewhere on body.
