Pediatrics - 11 1/2 month old baby suffering from diarrohea

Expert: Dr Graham Smith - 10/9/2009

Question
Dear Mr.Smith,

My 11 1/2 month old son has been passing loose stools since the past 3 days.  And, this happens either before or after his meal. I have been giving him Darolac thrice a day. He doesn't have fever or any other isues. Also, his appetite is not very great, just refuses to eat. But, he is quite active %26 cheerful doing his regular mischief! I have also noticed that there are small remnants of carrots or bean in his stools. Is this ok? Kindly advise.

Thanks %26 regards,
Shashi

Answer
The presence of undigested food suggests this is so-called "toddler's diarrhoea". It is a benign problem that can last a while. It is due to a fast transit time thru the gut. There is no specific treatment and the child puts weight on normally. It is more of a nuisance. I am not sure if the probiotic will help. If you are worried you need to consult your own doctor.
