Pediatrics - 35 mth old toddler vomiting and diarrhea
Expert: Dr. Taher Kagalwala - 10/23/2009
Question On Monday my son started his morning off with diarrhea. And he started to throw up after every meal and is unable to keep anything down. He goes to the bathroom about 5 or 6 times in one hour and has only been drinking gatorade. Although he's not keeping anything down dehydration is not a issue because he is urinating. He is acting very normal in between spells but I know he miserable. I also seen blood in his stool and took about 6 stool samples to his doctor So that they can test for salmonella poison. I'm just really scared because its been almost a week and he isn't getting any better what if he does have salmonella? What would it do to him? Please give me some tips to make him more comfortable and or possibly a way to make it go away.
Answer Dear Lauren,
Perhaps it is salmonella or some other bacterial infection. If the test comes positive, treating such an infection is usually very easy. Doctor will prescribe a suitable antibacterial that will work on the germs and kill them. You should keep him on a soft, easy to digest diet, and use hot fomentations on his stomach and intestinal area of the abdomen to soothe his pain. An energy drink like milk or chicken soup would boost his morale and make him a little more cheerful too. I would keep contacting the doctor who has sent the sample so that he can be put on appropriate medicines asap.
