Expert: Dr Kondekar Santosh Venketraman Pediatrician MD from Mumbai India - 10/31/2009
Question My almost 11 month old daughter is only 14lbs, and was dx FTT when she was 3 months old. She just doenst eat much, but our daily goal is to try to get her to drink 16 oz of formula. Most of the time that doesnt happen, we get to around 12.. but lately, the past 3 days it has become worse. Today she only drank 4 oz total, and has had nothing to eat since 4pm.. is now asleep, after having refused to eat with 4 more offers. We see an OT to help with eating issues, and she eats solids fairly well.. usually around 3-4 oz worth. Some pediasure in a cup as well, maybe 2 oz per day. We try to mix pediasure with her cereal, but she hasnt been into that or most other foods lately. She is also on prevacid for GERD. Any advice?? I am positive she is not getting enough calories, but have no idea how to get more in her when she swats the bottles, spoons and food away....
Answer on an average a baby needs almost 100 calorie in 100 ml feed per kilogram bodyw eight per day. that is she needs on an average 3-4 ouns per kg body weight. so fi she is 6 kg weight she should need around 18 ounz per day.
if the liquid intake is not enough fro soem reasosn, the kid will get progressively dehydrated (www.rehydrate.org) and that will amke child sleepy to build reserves to soem extent.
most throat infections,a denodis, tonsils ear infections cause painful swallowing causing reduced intake. it can also be a sign of serious infection even without any other complaints.
its p[rudent to take such chidl to take to a doctor to rule out dehydration, throat infection and any seriosu infection causing lethargy.
does he accept water easily? if yes.. that may be a little better sign that at least he swallows something. read danger symptoms at www.pediatricianonline.in
