Pediatrics - rash.....developing another food allergy??

Expert: Mary Pat, R.N. - 10/28/2009

Question
Hello. Our 4.5 year old is intolerant (most likely IGG allergies because he has 24-36 hour delayed reactions) to milk and soy and has esophogeal reflux.  He takes omeprazole (15mg) and drinks 18 oz of Neocate daily yet.  His weight has always been low.  Approx 10 days ago he developed this pimply rash on his face.  It seems to come and go or be more prevalent at some times.  After a warm bath - more prevalent.  In the morning - hardly notice it.  I have used cortizone and doesn't seem to phase it.  I have used Neosporin and doesn't seem to phase it.  Do you think he could be developing another food allergy (please no) - although his tummy seems fine and no gagging/food refusal/vomiting.  I saw hand food mouth but don't think it is that.  It really looks like acne/pimply but not red around pimples.  His appetite has been increasing and his gagging has nearly vanished.  Without the pimples I would have said we were doing so well, but it really makes me wonder what is going on.  With H1N1 and influenza, I really hate to take him to our doc.  Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Brenda:

Your son's rash could be a caused by a minor viral infection so if it is not bothering him and he is not acting ill I would just give it more time to clear up.  It could be a food allergy too but you need a doctor to determine that.  I would think if it were a food allergy it would be more widespread and it would be itchy.  I would not take a child into a medical office at this time if you can avoid it as the doctor's offices are full of children with H1N1 influenza and you certainly do not want to expose your child to that virus.
