About David Olson, MD
Expertise
I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.

Pediatrics - Knee pain 4 yr old

Expert: David Olson, MD - 11/3/2009

Question
My 4 almost 5 yr old son will wake up crying with right knee pain.  That happens periodically.  Now he is complaining when he wakes up in the morning that his right knee hurts when he bends it. No swelling, not warm to touch and no fever. He doesn't want to walk on it.
Thanks

Answer
Hi, Jamie,

Most night time pains in joints can be evaluated extensively and nothing is found.  If it is only the right knee and it hurts in the morning consistently, then see your doctor.  He/she will examine things, perhaps do an xray if appropriate, and may do some blood studies.

If it was just migratory pains in the legs at night, I probably wouldn't do anything, but specific pain in one place, with the symptoms persisting until the morning, warrants some evaluation by your doctor.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
