Question Hello Dr. Olson. I am a teenager and recently I've been breaking out in hives. I thought a first that I was allergic to tomatoes since my father was allergic to tomatoes when he was my age, however recently I have been breaking out in hives at times when I have not eaten anything for hours. I cannot seem to figure out what is causing this strange reaction and am getting to be rather desperate for an answer. If you could offer me some advice that, would be great. Thank you for your time.
Answer Hi, Caitlin,
It is sometimes very tough and sometimes impossible to find out what is the culprit for the hives. Hives are a common end response to thousands of possible allergens.
To complicate the matter, you can become allergic to something over time. This means it does not have to be something new in your diet, in the air, or a new medicine.
If these are hives that are going on for months, see your doctor, have a good exam and history and perhaps some other tests or referral to an allergist might be in order.
Good luck, Caitlin. Dr. Olson
