About David Olson, MD
Expertise
I would be happy to attempt to answer any questions about general pediatric topics, either medical issues or behavioral issues. This would include all the various questions one receives in a busy pediatric practice. I`m a board certified pediatrician in northern Michigan and have been in practice for over 15 years. I enjoy the teaching role I have in our practice and would enjoy the opportunity to help others with their pediatric problems.

Pediatrics - mucus in toddler stool

Expert: David Olson, MD - 11/5/2009

Question
My 2 1/2 year old occasionally has mucus in his stool.  Sometime it is on the outside of the stool and sometimes it is a stringy mucus that seems to be throughout the stool.  Some times his stool is also pretty hard and he has to really work to push it out.  Should I be worried?

Answer
Hi, Sam,

Mucous, without blood, in the stool of a healthy toddler, usually is OK and generally the cause is a food or a low grade virus illness.  If the stool is hard, increasing fiber, veggies and fruits, and increasing fluids usually will do the trick.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
