Pediatrics - need lotion recommendation
Expert: Mary Pat, R.N. - 11/2/2009
Question My 5 year old daughter has had a rash around her mouth for two months. Her pediatrician does not know what's causing it, but told me to use any skin lotion on it. I've been doing that for a month and it hasn't gotten any better. Can you recommend a specific lotion that could help her?
Answer Dear Amber:
Hard to say what the rash is without seeing it but from experience it could be one of two types, fungal or bacterial skin infection. If she is a thumb sucker and the area stays moist then it might be fungal in which case you can apply a cream such as Lotrimin once a day, appy a very thin film. If it seems to be working then continue for two weeks then stop. If no improvement in about a week stop the Lotrimin then wash the area well and try applying Neosporin ointment twice a day, again a thin film. See how that does. If neither plan works then ask to see a skin specialist.
